Want to Do Cloth from Day 1? :: Preparing for your Hospital Birth

July 8th, 2010

If you’re a parent who wants to swaddle your newborn baby in cloth as early as possible in life, and your baby will be born ina hospital, consider taking cloth diapers with you.

There are a few good options for just-born newborns. Preemie-size prefolds paired with newborn Bummis covers are a convenient, easy-to-pack, inexpensive option and is a great option for nearly every newborn. The new TiniFit All-in-One is a great fitting, no-thought-required diaper, so it’s especially easy to use when you may feel a little fuzzy after the labour of labour! There’s also the extra-small Fuzzi Bunz Pocket Eiaper – so cute and especially great for smaller babies, such as preemies and multiples.

We also recommend bringing a few fleece diaper liners or Bio-Soft Liners. Meconium, the tar-like poo of the first couple of days, is quite sticky and it’s just easier to deal with when it’s on a liner. Liners makes clean-up easy.  Meconium will likely stain, just so you know, but the green-ish undertone of the inside of your diapers will disappear with an afternoon in the sun.

You won’t need many wipes, but bring along a few for the small messes you may encounter, maybe a dozen or so. Beyond that, you’ll just need a wetbag to transport the dirties home.

Oh, and one more thing to keep in mind. For the sake of being sanitary, all supplies provided to a patient must be used or disposed of. This applies to the disposable diapers some hospitals provide as well. It may seem odd to espouse disposables as the best environmentally-friendly option, but if the disposable diapers are going to end up in the landfill either way, it seems more practical to USE them first. And if you just can’t stand the thought of a disposable on your baby’s bum, consider taking them home to give them as gifts to someone else or passing them onto a service that provides supplies for families in need.

(As a side note, St. Paul’s in downtown Vancouver provides prefolds for in-hospital use to all maternity ward patients. Talk to your doctor or midwife to see if there’s anything special you need to bring.)

We wish you a safe, healthy delivery and many blessings on your journey with your new babe in arms!

Special Situations :: Preemies – Tiny Cloth Diapers for Tiny Bums

June 23rd, 2010

It’s easy to ooh and ahh over a newborn’s cute itty-bitty bum, but those ooh’s and aah’s can quickly subside if your diaper is leaking because it’s too big. What to do for your extra-small little one?

There are some excellent extra-small diapers on the market these days and all are both practical and fashionable.

For an easy, budget-conscience option, use preemie size organic cotton prefolds and lay them inside Newborn-size Bummis Super Brite Diaper Covers. These covers fit babies as small as four pounds, include a notch in the front to fit around the umbilical stump, and have a great reputation for containing every mess. This is an especially nice feature early in life when that gastro-colic reflex that makes your baby poo after every feed is in full swing.

You can also use Organic Bamboo Flat Inserts in your covers in place of prefolds. Bamboo offers greater absorbency than cotton and is extra-soft against your baby’s bum.

As a second variation of the prefold/cover combo, use small hemp-organic cotton Joey Bunz inserts inside a newborn size cover. They will provide ample absorbency for a small bladder, will catch all the messes, and best of all, require no folding. Joey Bunz are very versatile in their uses, so it’s great to have a few on hand for other diapering needs too!

There’s also the new TiniFit All-in-One diaper, and it’s a soft, well-crafted diaper out of Scotland. This diaper is convenient and easy to put on, as well as absorbent and very trim fitting. It features bamboo rayon, which is Oeko-tex certified, and the diaper itself is both ethically and sustainably produced. It fits newborns as small as five pounds. Definitely one of our favourites!

Pockets are a great way to go to get a trim fit as well. Extra-small FuzziBunz fit babies down to four pounds and offer the trimness and flexibility for which pockets are known. These are great diapers to use if you want the convenience of a diaper that goes on in one step, but want a diaper with variable levels of absorbency. This can be especially welcome if you have twins who pee differently – one who tinkles through the day and one who floods every few hours, for example.

Here’s to all the parents whose extra-small babies take up an extra-big place in their hearts!  What has your best solution been?  How did you figure out what would work well?

From a Seasoned Mom :: How Cloth Diapers Influenced my Parenting Style

June 14th, 2010

As part of our Earth Day 2010 Contest, Stephanie P  shares her thoughts on how cloth diapers influenced her as a parent:

Choosing cloth diapers led me down the path I am on as a parent.  When I heard about cloth diapers during my first pregnancy, my research led to finding so much other information about natural parenting and green living.  I’m thankful we made the decision to use cloth for our babies, and for the lasting benefits.

The advice I would give others when deciding to become a cloth diapering household is simple. Always think about the benefits, and how these outweigh the challenges.  My first reason to cloth diaper my daughter Lily when she was born was for health reasons.  I personally have environmental allergies to perfumes, and chemicals. Therefore I could not use disposable feminine hygiene products and soaps and shampoos to mention a few. My personal experience led me to worry for her health.  We have chosen to use clothing made from organic cotton and diapers made from bamboo.  I also use only the most natural and scent free detergents to wash her diapers.

It seemed like a logical choice to cloth diaper; her health means the world to me.

Secondly the environment played a huge part in that decision too.  In our home, we choose organics and whenever possible we support local business and farms to feed us.  We compost, grow our own vegetables in the summer and recycle and reuse just about everything…cloth diapers make sense in that way too, they are reducing our foot print on the earth.

Considering the health and environmental benefits,  washing a load of diapers and hanging them out to dry (or even tossing them in the dryer) will seem like a small price to pay.

Swimming :: With a Heavier Wallet (and a contest, too)

June 10th, 2010

Jumping into the deep end with cloth diapers can be perceived as a difficult thing to do by some.  So let’s start in the calm waters of reusable swim diapers and do a simple comparison with two factors:

92 cents per use

Disposable Swim Diapers

1. Cost is almost $1 per use.

2. Garbage generation is equal to 1 diaper per swim – several per day if you are on holiday and coming in and out of the water/pool.

Reusable Swim Diapers

1. Cost is less than $13.50 all in (no per use cost to consider).  2 weeks of holiday and you’ve come out even.  Everything after that is gravy.

2. Garbage generation is nil.

Do they do the job?  YES!

Are they easy to care for?  YES!  Just throw them in the wash with the swimsuits after swimming.

To get you started on the right foot, we are going to give away a Swimmi to a family who’s never used one before and give away a Fabulous Wet Bag to a family who currently uses Swmmis.

Here is how you enter:

1. To be entered to win a Swimmi, leave a comment here about how you would convince your friends (non Swimmi or cloth diaper using) to try using a Swimmi for their little one.

2. To be entered to win a Wet Bag, upload a photo to Facebook of your little one wearing their Swimmi Swim Diaper.  Make sure that you leave a comment here that the photo’s been posted so we know.

Contest closes Sunday June 13th.  Winner announced week of June 14th.  Open to Canadian residents only.

Swimming :: With a Lighter Footprint

June 9th, 2010

With warmer weather and days at the pool just around the corner, it’s high time for a post on using cloth at the swimming pool.

Swimmi swim diapers offer all the protection you’ll need for summer pool parties and public pool outings. These swim diapers don’t require anything else to be used underneath them – like disposable swim diapers, they’re designed just to contain messes.

And contain they will! These swim diapers have extra-strong Aplix (think really strong Velcro) to ensure a snug fit around the waist and stretchy lycra to make sure there’s a snug fit around the legs. They’re also lined with a sports mesh to make mess clean-up simple. We just recommend sizing down, both to make sure you’ve got a good snug fit and because you don’t need to account for the bulkiness of a diaper underneath.

What we especially like is that they’re no-fuss. Just put them on like a wrap-style diaper cover, whether using them alone or under a swim suit (for the few public pools that require two layers of protection on babies).

A wet bag is another essential item for swim time. These waterproof bags are not only designed to carry dirty diapers home from a day’s outing, but also wet clothes, bathing suits, towels, and other swim gear. While you only need one swim diaper, consider in investing in several wet bags since they have so many uses – their usefulness will come in handy for years to come!

We love the functionality of Swimmis so much, we’d like to give one away.

Stay tuned to the blog tomorrow for details!

Two International Trips with Cloth Diapers :: Zero Garbage Created

June 8th, 2010

Thank you to Amber, who shared her story with us about traveling with cloth diapers.

Amber, where have your adventures taken you recently and what was your diapering strategy while you were traveling?

We have just returned from two international trips in the last few months in which we used cloth diapers and did not have access to a washing machine.

Our first trip was to the UK for 10 days in which I took an assortment of bumGenius 3.0 pockets diapers for nights and long days, bamboo fitted and Bummis covers and two g-diaper covers with both disposable inserts and cloth inserts.  England was pretty easy.  On the plane (for both trips) I used the G-diapers so that I wasn’t traveling for over a day with wet and soiled diapers.  I would put a bumGenius on if I knew that she might be down for a longer nap on the plane to ensure no leaks.  I actually didn’t have any major disasters the whole time!

During the day in England we used the fitted and then at the end of the day I used the normal powdered detergent I usually use at home and rinsed and scrubbed down diapers.  In England, the radiators came in very handy for hanging and drying (no access to sun or outside here) and they were usually dry over night.

Our trip to Vietnam and Thailand I pretty much brought the same amount of diapers.  I should have brought more bumGenius pocket diapers as they dried much better in a humid climate.  This time I did bring a whole package of G diaper inserts as we had many travel days and airplane rides but did not use the whole thing in the end.  It was good to have the mix of diapers though.  We were usually in one place for at least 2 nights, so we were always washing and hanging.

We spent a week on an island that pretty much could be described as paradise.  My daughter, Safia, pretty much only wore a diaper the whole time or a t-shirt and a Swimmi Swim Diaper.  Drying was great here as we had a line on our bungalow and the wind and sun had them dry in no time.

I was worried that my diapers would come home pretty worn and with soap build up but because of the sun and our washing, I think they came home whiter and brighter than before.

My one difficulty with traveling with cloth diapers and a baby of course, is the amount of suitcase space they take up.  We were travelling very light for the month but the diapers eat up a lot of space!!  Looking back I wouldn’t have done it any differently.  My husband and I discussed the amount of garbage we would have created over the month and especially when we were on the island where everything’s is boated in and I am pretty sure they just burn the local garbage.

This in its self is worth the effort.

Traveling With Our Baby :: How We Made Cloth Diapers Work

June 7th, 2010

Thank you to Kelly and lovely Miss O. for this guest blog post.  For more great reading, head over to Kelly’s blog, the Accidental Pharmacist.

Recently, my husband and I took our infant daughter on her first trip to join my parents in Maui. Normally light packers, we had no idea what to bring now that there are three of us.  Though we use cloth diapers at home, we were leery of taking them on vacation. However, the alternative – using disposables – was no more attractive largely because we felt strongly about carrying out what we carry in.

Overall, the consensus among moms that I asked was that traveling with cloth diapers is manageable, and with a little planning, 1.5 days worth of diapers is plenty. In addition, some moms also suggested that we divide the cloth diaper stash between multiple bags in case one bag gets lost, that we bring our own laundry detergent and that we try to pack lightly.

With that in mind, here’s what we brought:

  1. 16 prefolds (versatile, easy to pack, easy to wash)
  2. 2 fitted cloth diapers (overnights)
  3. 4 diaper covers
  4. 10 cloth wipes
  5. change pad
  6. diaper cream
  7. Nature’s Clean detergent in a ziplock freezer bag
  8. waterproof diaper tote & 2 wet bags for day trips
  9. infant bathing suit

What worked for us:

  • Prefolds: We started off with a diaper service so we’re used to prefolds. The nice thing about prefolds is that they’re versatile, serving sometimes as a bare-bum playmat and other times as a diaper – this was perfect for the hot weather. Also, because prefolds are flat, they dried quickly (good in a humid climate) and didn’t take up too much room.
  • Overnights: We packed a couple fitted diapers for overnights. The fitteds took up a little more room but they also came in handy on the flight home, saving us from an in-flight diaper change (ever tried to change a diaper on a plane?).
  • Washing: Ahead of time, we changed our initial booking from a hotel to a cottage with a washer and dryer (and it was cheaper!). It turned out that the cottage, which also had 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, and a pool, was perfect for travelling with a baby. I should also mention that we don’t have an in-suite washer at home, so this alone was a treat (and another post for another time).
  • Swimming: rather than buying the disposable swimming diapers, we took along an infant bathing suit that was purchased at our local pool. The prefolds fit nicely underneath so we didn’t have to worry about buying disposable diapers for swimming.
  • Day trips: For the day trips we just did as we do at home and took along our wet bag.

What we’d do differently:

  • Easier Diapers: We’d bring at least 5 all-in-ones or pockets for the grandparents. My mom has Parkinson’s Disease and sometimes the snappi/prefold/cover combination was a bit much. My dad didn’t even bother. Needless to say, after a little time on Google my mom is the new biggest fan of AMP’s all-in-one diaper (which we have but didn’t think to bring). “This is it? Made in Canada, you say? Fantastic!”
  • In-Flight Diapers: We used disposables on the way to Hawaii thinking it would be easier. In the end, it was quite the opposite. For future trips I think we’ll just stick to a super absorbent cloth diaper to minimize the in-flight diaper changes.
  • Back-up: Unsure of our system, we did bring along some disposables. However, following the advice of others, next time I think I’d bring along some Flip Disposable Inserts instead.
  • Relax: I wouldn’t worry so much. Cloth diapering is surprisingly easy and it was just as easy on vacation.

Have you traveled with cloth diapers? Do you have any tips to add?

Changing An Older Baby :: Tips to Make It Easier

June 4th, 2010

Diaper changing time can be a special bonding time with your baby. In the first six months especially, incorporating a sense of play and eye contact with your infant while on the change table can be hugely rewarding.

But as our wee ones begin to hit all those lovely growth milestones – like grasping, rolling and crawling – diaper-changing playtime can feel more like a day at the fair than a blissful, quiet time with your babe. Here are a few tips to make changing your older baby a bit easier…

Have your diapers prepped and preloaded. This most certainly expedites diaper changes. Make sure pocket diapers are pre-stuffed with their inserts, one-size diapers are sized to their appropriate size, and all-in-ones (AIO).  If you are using Bio-Soft Liners for poop management, make sure that your diapers are lined before the event starts.

Also, it may also seem obvious, but make sure you lay out the new diaper and have it close at hand before taking off the dirty one! If you have a baby who just can’t be bothered with laying down and insists that diaper changes be done on the fly while standing (or running), this is definitely essential.  Side snapping diapers make stand up changes much easier.

Have a special toy for change time. This will occupy restless hands and may help a child focus. Always a good thing…

Have your wipes premoistened. As with most tasks, preparation is everything. Having your wipes wet and nearby will allow you to do a bum wipe-down quickly without leaving your child squirming and/or unattended.

If you have a baby who rolls, choose diapers that can be put on with one hand, since usually you’re holding the baby down with one arm and diapering with the other. If you love prefolds, preload them into a wrap-style cover. If you’re into AIO’s, choose the styles with velcro rather than snaps. Diapers that go on in one step rather than two (AIO’s, pockets, All-in-Two‘s, etc) can be a huge boon at this stage of diapering!

Choose diapers that can’t be taken off by toddler hands. Some toddlers never have the urge to figure out how the velcro or the Snappi on their diaper works, but others are only happy if they’re nekkid. If you have such a curious tyke, consider using diapers with snaps, which are stronger than toddler strength, or put your velcro diapers on backward so that the velcro strip is away from curious fingers.

Do you have any tips and tricks you’ve learned from diapering your rolling, crawling baby? We’d love to hear them!

Saving Money :: Using Infant Prefolds Beyond 15 Lbs

June 2nd, 2010

For those who cloth diaper with a budget in mind, prefolds are always a lovely addition to your system. But then comes that day when you grab the Snappi to fasten the diaper and can’t quite reach the sides of the prefold around your baby’s waist…

But no need to put those prefolds into storage quite yet! You can extend your savings by putting your outgrown prefolds to use in other diapering capacities.

Here are 4 great ideas:

  1. If you’re someone who uses pocket diapers, consider using your outgrown prefolds to stuff inside your pocket. Prefolds offer substantial absorbency, which is especially welcome as your baby grows (and pees more and more heavily) or for nighttime use. Also, for those wanting to use more natural fibres in your diapering routine, both hemp and organic cotton prefolds add that “natural edge” to your synthetic pockets.
  2. Outgrown prefolds can also be tri-folded and laid in a wrap-style cover to extend their life. This is a GREAT way to save money, as covers and prefolds are a very cost effective way to cloth diaper and it most certainly extends the length of time infant prefolds can be used on your baby.
  3. Another prefold idea is to lay a tri-folded infant-size prefold on top of your larger sized prefolds to work as a booster. This is definitely a super-absorbent option, but it’s rather bulky and will make your child look like the Weeble-Wobble toys of yore, so it’s an option best utilized at nighttime or on road trips, when a trim bottom end is not a priority.
  4. Even once they’re outgrown, having a few infant prefolds on hand as diapering accessories are very handy. They’ll serve you well as change pads on-the-go, big wipes for big messes, or as a protective cover for your boy who tends to pee during diaper changes.

Use your imagination… prefolds have a multitude of uses!

Saving money and being frugal is an art in this day and age – we hope your decision to cloth diaper has helped your family to feel satisfied in knowing you’ve saved significantly through your baby’s diapering years!

From a Mom-to-Be :: What it Means to Choose Cloth Diapers

May 31st, 2010

As part of our Earth Day 2010 Contest, Mary (from our Mom-to-Be category) shares her thoughts on what her choice to cloth diaper means:

My partner and I decided to use cloth diapers before we had any idea what that meant.  Before looking into it, the barriers were:

  1. the initial cost of getting set up for cloth diapering vs buying jumbo size packages of disposables as needed;
  2. buying new products vs used or home-made didn’t quite fit with our values.

Once we had done our research, we became excited about cloth diapering because it makes so much sense!  The fabulous environmental and economic benefits aside, cloth diapering allows us to:

  1. support a local, planet/ people/pet-friendly company
  2. take responsibility for our waste
  3. facilitate elimination communication and toilet-training
  4. act as ambassadors for cloth diapering
  5. resell or gift our diapers when we’re finished with them
  6. buy quality products that connect us with a new community

Our decision to use cloth diapers was best supported by the resources offered New & Green, including the awesome information on the website, a helpful conversation with your team at Birthfest, the free demonstration DVD, and the workshops.

We’re excited about starting cloth diapering when we welcome our baby in June!

From a Seasoned Mom: How Cloth Diapers Helped My Baby’s Rash by Sarah J

May 14th, 2010

As part of our Earth Day 2010 Contest, Sarah J (our winner in the Seasoned Mom category) shares her thoughts on why cloth diapers have been a good fit for her family:

I can still remember the first day – everything swirling around in my mind – toys, diapers, rashes, feeding, dog barking, my older son yelling and my baby crying AGAIN.  It was like slow motion.  I had tried EVERYTHING.  I  was at my wit’s end.  My baby had the WORST diaper rash and NOTHING was helping.  I had switched to every kind of disposable diaper and diaper cream.  I shudder to think of the environmental impact that all of this had not to mention the economical impact that the experience had on my wallet.  I opened my mailbox and found an ad for cloth diapers.  Cloth diapers – the ONLY diapers I had not tried.  So I ventured.  I bought a pack of Bummi’s Prefold diapers and pre-washed them three times to prepare them to be absorbent.

Skeptical?  Absolutely!  I was at my wit’s end remember?  My daughter was colicky and rashy and miserable.  Nothing helped.  Nothing stopped the rash or the crying.  I put the diaper on and waited.  First pee change – rash was less.  Second pee change – rash was less.  Third change – NO rash.  Seriously?  Wow – I was hooked!!  Even my husband who thought my project was crazy, jumped on board with great excitement!  Our daughter never had a rash again and she potty trained at 18 months.

Since that monumental moment we have had another daughter who is cloth diapered since birth.  She is also rash free.  She is our cloth diaper tester and has worn most of what is out there.  She certainly has her favourites at 8 months old!!

I have pangs of guilt daily that my oldest child was not cloth diapered because I think that it helps to set a precedent for how they will treat the environment – though he is very earthy now helping with his sisters.  It has become a way of life for them!  We wash our diapers in the evening and then my middle daughter helps to hang them on the line.  My middle daughter doesn’t know what a disposable diaper is and I hope to keep it that way!  I have talked to many a new mom and mom-to-be about the benefits of cloth diapering.  The biggest EXCUSE that I hear is that it is “too much work”.  Honestly I tell them that they can’t AFFORD not to try. How much work is a load of laundry??  Start the wash and walk away.  That isn’t a lot of work and the benefits to their darling skin, the environment and your wallet are AMAZING!!

From a New Mom: How We Started Using Cloth Diapers by Meaghan M.

May 12th, 2010

As part of our Earth Day 2010 Contest, Meaghan M (our winner in the New Mom  category) shares her journey to successfully using cloth diapers with her daughter:

We started our cloth diapering experience by attending a Cloth Diaper 101 Workshop by New & Green when I was still pregnant.  The best part of attending this great workshop was my husband’s enjoyment of the learning experience.  On our way out he said ‘I could have listened to that for another 2 hours!’, as compared to the breastfeeding class we had been to that day, which he almost fell asleep in (Kresha was the fabulous instructor at this workshop).

After the class we were so excited to pick up or Newborn Rental Kit and check it all out, but we still didn’t have a baby…Charlotte came two weeks late, on February 27, 2010.  We used disposables for a couple of days settling in, then jumped full steam ahead into our rental kit, and loved it!  When our time was up with the rental, we (reluctantly) used disposables for a couple of weeks until we had decided on and ordered our own set of prefolds.

The first time my husband put the disposable on he said ‘How do these things work?’, which is a real testament to how easy the cloth were.

Now we’re two days into using our prefolds and consider ourselves true cloth advocates and aficionados!

From a Mom-to-Be: Why I’m Choosing Cloth Diapers by Rachel M

May 10th, 2010

As part of our Earth Day 2010 Contest, Rachel M (our winner in the Mom-to-Be category) shares her thoughts on why cloth diapers are right for her family:

Our first baby is due June 25th and we’ve decided to cloth diaper.  Both my husband and I are concerned about environmental issues, particularly climate change and the impact of our ’carbon footprints’.  We decided that cloth diapering was something we could do that would actually make a difference - start putting our money where our mouth is so to speak (although we are in fact saving money in the long run, BONUS!).

My mum cloth diapered all five of her children but my husband was “disposable” or “single use” diapered. It may sound a bit silly but he wishes he’d had the choice to not pollute landfills with 2-3 years worth of his dirty diapers! And that’s the choice that we are making for our baby, our children are the ones inheriting this planet, I’d like their early years to be as environmentally-consequence free as possible. We can hope they make the right decision later in life…but at least we can make the right ones before they start making them for themselves. Change begins at home, one diaper at a time! :-)

We understand it’s perhaps not going to be as “convenient” to start out with – we live in an apartment with a front loading high efficiency washing machine and of course no clothes line in the backyard, so there will be challenges.  But we are committed and I am confident we will get into the swing of things with a system that works for us in no time!

We have met with a bit of opposition in the form of the odd disparaging comment from relatives or colleagues at work.  Of course this just makes us more determined!  I have found online resources really helpful in looking at various types of diapering as well as getting feedback from other cloth diapering parents! I love the kinds of options that are available to us now – cloth diapering has come a long way from large cotton squares and safety pins!  It’s encouraging as a mum-to-be knowing that there is support and advice out there and we’re looking forward to being part of that community!

All the best with meeting your little one Rachel!

Mom to Mom, Sharing Our Cloth Diaper Stories – Earth Day 2010 Contest

May 6th, 2010

We asked our customers, FaceBook fans, newsletter subscribers and Twitter followers to join us in sharing their stories.  Moms-to Be, New Moms and Seasoned Moms generously shared their stories and photos and we are so excited to share them with you.

Be prepared to smile, nod with that sense of knowing and feel inspired by other Moms, who, like you have considered or are already choosing to use cloth diapers for their babies.

These stories were part of a contest to win a year’s worth of Cloth Diaper Detergent in a Fabulous Wet Bag.

We are pleased to announce the winners today.  Watch, starting on Monday and running through the week as their stories are published here.

And we’ll continue to share stories because stories and experiences connect us, make us feel a part of something bigger and inspire us to either rise up or push forward with what we believe in.

Enjoy!

Congratulations to the following Moms (and thanks to the more than 35 moms who shared their stories!):

In the Mom-to-Be Category – Rachel M

In the New Mom Category – Meaghan M

In the Seasoned Mom Category – Sarah J
